Diamonds, Anyone?

The IAAF aims to create a global, consistent, world class, mega-elite competition series for world class, mega-elite athletes. To do this, the organization decided to replace the Golden League with the Diamond League yesterday.

What does this mean?

It means that beginning in 2010, the best athletes from 32 events will compete 12 times to accumulate points. Those who win the most points will earn a 4 karat diamond at the end of the series. Sure, first and foremost, pro athletes push their bodies for the love of the sport and for the challenge . . . and in the case of these athletes, for a decent paycheck. But to throw on top a not-so-small piece of bling as incentive? That’s like having your cake and eating it with loads of confetti frosting on top.
